A main course of our top-shelf stainless header with a hearty side serving of our FJ40 stainless exhaust. When matched with mandrel bent 2 ½" exhaust pipes, our unsurpassed header design provides even better breathing for your F/2F engine. The perfect pairing!  

We used 100% stainless steel construction throughout for strength, corrosion resistance, and long life. Hand TIG welding utilizing inert gas back purging is used to prevent weld porosity and maximize strength. The beautifully polished exhaust tip provides a subtle cue that this is not an ordinary exhaust hidden underneath. Made in the USA and meticulously handcrafted, each system requires over 22 hours to produce. 

We top it all off with a sprinkling of everything else you’ll need for a satisfying finish. Stainless nuts, bolts, clamps, and even a tube of copper anti-seize are included. Just bolt it up and you’re ready to go!

The 3 into 2 into 1 tubular header design for the Toyota 2F 6-cylinder engine was originally introduced by Jim Sickles of Downey Off Road Manufacturing (Downey on ih8mud.com). There have been several updates and revisions through the years. Downey Off Road closed their doors in 2009 but Mark Algazy of Mark’s Off-Road (65swb45 on ih8mud.com) arranged to continue building and selling an updated version of the original Downey header. As of 2015 Mark’s had also (unfortunately) ceased regular production of headers.

Based on the continued popularity of the tried-and-true F/2F engine, we set out to answer the call in the Land Cruiser community for a new supply of quality headers. Land Cruiser owners wanted a replacement for the many cracked Toyota intake/exhaust manifolds, and rusty aftermarket mild-steel headers. We wanted to create something just a bit better. Up until then, our mission was solely focused on the header, not a custom exhaust system.

The custom exhaust is the inevitable conclusion of our relentless drive to perfect the fit of our stainless steel header for 2F (and some 1F - see fitment notes) engines in the 40 Series Land Cruiser.  We decided the header output flange should be positioned to allow an exhaust to run over the top of the skid plate. As we perfected the fit of the header, we realized that we should mock up an entire exhaust system. When we showed the test rig, complete with stainless steel header and exhaust, the response was immediate and definite! 

Our ultimate exhaust system was carefully engineered to maximize the performance of the F/2F engine.  

The TriMeki header synchronizes perfectly with the Toyota 2F inline 6-cylinder combustion pulses, thereby maximizing exhaust scavenging.  The header mounting flange is hand ported after welding to optimize gas flow from cylinder head to the CNC mandrel bent primaries. The 3-2-1 design develops excellent torque at low RPM while the 1½” primaries and 2½” outlet provide maximum flow for horsepower at the top end.  Drivability throughout the entire RPM range is achieved with a superior balance of torque and horsepower as compared to 6 into 1, or three-piece long-tube header designs.  

Optimum gas flow is maintained from the header to the exhaust midpipe thanks to our exclusive articulated “ball and socket” joint design. From there, the mandrel bent 2½” diameter pipes carry the hot gasses in and out of the high-performance muffler.  A straight-through, perforated 2½” stainless steel core with two-stage acoustic packing maintains the exhaust gas velocity through the muffler while generating a smooth, deep exhaust tone.

The TriMeki exhaust system has been designed to provide a dyno-proven restriction-free exhaust gas flow with a deep, resonating sound that is powerful without being harsh or droning at highway speeds. This 100% stainless steel system will further enhance your FJ40 with a muscular exhaust sound and improved free flowing performance.  

  • Tubing: All tubing is CNC mandrel-bent from 16 gauge heavy duty 304 stainless steel. The mandrel bending ensures optimal exhaust gas flow by eliminating any kinks or restrictions.

  • Hand TIG welded by the finest exhaust craftsman in the business today utilizing back purging to prevent weld porosity and to maximize strength.

  • Header Flange: Flange: ⅜" thick 304 stainless for strength and stability with laser cut precision to provide the best fit possible. Internal welds are hand ported. 

  • Header Collectors: Designed and expertly assembled to provide optimum gas flow and smooth transition to the header outlet.

  • O2 Sensor ready: The radius flared 304 stainless steel joint comes with an integrated oxygen sensor bung. The perfect match for a Holley® Sniper EFI or other EFI installations.

  • Hardware: ARP stainless fasteners to match our exclusive 316 stainless steel low profile clamp. Stainless steel flat band clamps for easy, leak free muffler installation with simple hand tools.

  • Designed for use with our Extreme Low Profile 316 stainless steel exhaust clamp and articulated header joint: A TriMeki exclusive!  Our rugged, investment cast, detachable clamp, with its claw-style hinge allows for easier exhaust system installation. The clamp and radius flared exhaust joint offers 13 degrees of exhaust pipe articulation while a slip-in backup mandrel assures a leak-free, air-tight connection. This “ball and socket” style junction helps to maintain a continuous inner diameter for optimum airflow.

This header and exhaust system is designed to fit 1969 - 12/1978 FJ-40 Land Cruisers equipped with 2F or 1F engines.

The TriMeki exhaust system mates only to the TriMeki header using exclusive stainless exhaust clamp with articulated joint:

  • The exhaust (and header) will NOT fit 40 Series Cruisers fitted with power take-off (PTO) systems.

  • The header (and therefore exhaust) will not fit 40 Series Cruisers equipped with column gear shift assembly, available in some markets through 1971.

  • The header (and therefore exhaust) will not fit 40 Series Cruisers equipped with the wide-runner intake manifold - original equipment for 1968 model year 1F engines.

  • The exhaust will NOT fit Jan '79 and later FJ40 Land Cruisers, aka “Squares”

NOTES: 

  • The exhaust system passes above the stock skid plate that protects the transmission and transfer case. Installation of the system requires modification to the front of this skid plate.

  • The exhaust exits below the drivers side rear fender & behind the rear tire. Exhaust passes between the leaf spring and the driver's side frame rail in front of the leaf spring shackle. FJ40s with modifications to extend the wheelbase may have tire rubbing issues.

  • Not legal for use on emissions controlled vehicles.

  • Use a high-temperature anti-seize compound (aluminum, graphite &/or copper based) on all threads, especially the ARP stainless steel bolt for the exhaust clamp. Stainless steel threads can gall without proper lubrication.
  • Do not use an impact wrench on the exhaust clamp bolt. Hand tools only.
  • TriMeki does NOT recommend wrapping headers with any sort of exhaust wrap. Exhaust wraps will void any and all warranty claims.*

For customers seeking improved thermal management and reduced underhood temperatures, we do recommend the application of a ceramic coating.*

For customers seeking the highest level of thermal management regardless of cosmetics, we strongly recommend Swain Tech Coatings’ proprietary products.*

For customers not as concerned with thermal benefits, there are several national brands that provide more cosmetic focused “ceramic” coatings with a high shine, custom colors and moderate thermal benefits.*

For many customers, the benefits of a professionally applied ceramic coating far outweigh any warranty concerns.
